Emperor of the Sea (해신 Hae-sin, lit. Sea God) is a 51 episode South Korean epic drama that aired in 2004 on KBS2. The show focuses on the life of famous historical figure, Jang Bogo (장보고), who was born a slave but rose to the highest ranks of Silla society. The show was received extremely well, holding the number one spot in the ratings for the majority of the weeks it aired.

Series synopsis
Based on the life of a true historical figure, Emperor of the Sea is an epic Korean Drama based on a novel by author Choi In Ho. Choi Soo Jong stars as Jang Bogo, who rises from a lowly slave to the military commander of the sea during the Unified SillaDynasty (676~935). Along the way, he battles pirates, and engages in a heated rivalry with Madam Jami, a Shilla noble who squares off against Jang Bo Go for trade rights in the South Sea. Song Il Gook, winner of the 2002 KBS New Actor award, is Yeomjang, Jang Bo Go's charismatic comrade, who supports Jang in his ascension to The Emperor of the Sea. But Yeomjang competes with Jang for the love of Jeong-hwa.

[edit]Jang Bogo
Jang Bogo is an historical figure who virtually dominated the seas of the East Asia (hence name Sea God or Emperor of the Sea) and international trade from Tang China and Japan to the North China sea during the time of Unified Shilla Dynasty.
Goong Bok starts from lowest social class as a slave on the docks of Cheonghae. Goong Bok lost his mother to pirates when he was young. His farther was a slave carpenter of the police office of Cheonghae. Working hard in the rough docks, Goong Bok soon masters the sea and has the knack of building ships. Faced with challenges, he becomes calmer and bolder. Both Goong Bok and Nyeon learns the martial arts from Choi Muchang. Such character has helped him to rise from a gladiator to a security guard, military head of Muryongun and then ambassador of Cheonghae. As a part of this, he eliminated the pirates by installing Cheonghae-Jin on Wando Peninsula, which is a geographically important sea route. With his clever battle strategies, he is able to defeat the Army led by Madam Jami & install the true ruler of Korea. However, even after repeated request by the King, he refuses the high positions. After the KIng is assasinated by Kim Yang, he prepares the army to lead a final assault & remove the corrupt ministers appointed by Kim Yang.
At the end, Consul Jang Bogo is fatally stabbed in his office with a concealed knife by Yeom Jang. Jang Bogo accepts his death without any resistance, and his body is found at midnight by his mate Nyeon, Choi Muchang and Janghwa. Even after his death, His army fights to the last men as a mark of respect.

Yeom Jang (born Yeom Moon) is another historical figure and the charismatic rival of Jang Bogo and competes to win love from the same woman against Jang Bogo.
Raised by pirates, Yeom Jang is capable of using short knives in a remarkable skill and accuracy. He is captured by Jang Bogo, & his awarded the most ruthless punishment by burning his forehead with a mark. He is eventually released from prison by Kim Yang. For this, he trains Kim Yang's men in Martial arts & leads the assault against Madam Jami's men, when they temporary reconcile with Jang Bogo. Post war, he is appointed the head of King's body guards. Unwanting he participates in the assasination of the King. With War looming against Jang Bogo, he plans a visit to chongehae to defuse the situation & promising Kim yang, if need arise he will assasinate him, provide Kim spares Jang Bogo's wife & the people of Silla. During Meeting, he tries his best to deviate Jang from his attack, but Jang had made his mind, to end the in effective & corrupt ministers in the King's cabinet.In the end, he betrays Jang Bogo and kills him.
He receives a jolt after the assasination, when Kim Yang launches an attack on shilla & he is imprisoned by Kim Yang. He escapes from Kim Yang's custody & helps Jung hwa escape the massacre. He is killed by a shower of arrows fired by Kim Yang's army.

Madam Jami is a fair and smart noble lady of Shilla and fights for the trade right in the South Sea against Jang Bogo.
Madam Jami is also good at making strategies to win what she wants and sometimes she pursues for her lust regardless of the means always longing for more wealth and power.
Madam Jami decides to take care of Jung Hwa, who lost her father to pirates in a recent pirate attack on Cheonghae. But she tries to use Jung Hwa to fulfill her ambitions.
Madam Jami accepts Goong Bok to her private guards after Goong Bok escaped from his slavery by winning a fight at Bangmajang, but plans to put him at trouble when Goong Bok gets help from Seolpyeong, her trade rival.
